“I’m proud to be a female artist in this field. Women have to work harder to get the same recognition and respect that men do, but I don’t mind that. I like to work hard. To be respected as an artist, not by gender, but by my work is important to me. Designing Edna's and Evelyn’s costumes in #Incredibles2 was great because they are both strong in individual ways. Helping to shape their character arcs from a female perspective was amazing and rewarding. “I don’t think of my gender when I’m working, and I don’t think of the gender of my colleagues. But at the same time, being a woman in a technical field, when you go out to conferences, to talks, you realize what a dearth of us there is. It’s a sobering thing. It’s not easy to do it all – to be a working mom with two kids, and be at a place like Pixar where we all bring our best craft to our work everyday. But I love what I do with a passion, and on difficult days, it’s good to remember that I am part of bringing something incredible into the world. My kids get to see me do what I love day after day after day. I hope that means something to them. “When my oldest son (who’s almost 9 now) was about 4, he was very excited to tell me that he couldn’t wait to be a mommy. I thought it was so sweet and told him how great it will be when he has kids and is a daddy someday. He immediately got really upset and started to cry. He was like, ‘No, I really want to be a mommy.’ When I asked him why he was so sad, he said, 'Because I don’t want to work from home like daddy. I want to be like you and go to work at Pixar.'
